Pandemics are age old. Influenza
strains inhabit the earth’s crust and the
soil layers. They emerge when a weak
host appears and allows the virus entry.
Re-emergence of influenza strains are
resistant to antibiotics and other viral
anti-flagrant aids. The reason for this is
that virus’ have become adept at
mutation and often they will change
based on the host who is harboring
them meaning that they become specific
to the person who has them and they
are not at all the same for all people.
This virulent strain of avian influenza
called the “bird flu” is dangerous to be
sure. It could become a pandemic
which would be difficult to control and
many people could potentially die. So
which comes first the pandemic or the
egg?
It is impossible to control all the viral
and bacteriological pathogens housed
in the ecosystem called the planet
earth. Many strains of virus and bacteria
remain latent in the earth’s soil, water,
trees, foliage and other areas. It is of
particular interest (and human
participation is warranted) to make sure
that these virulent strains remain latent
and do not emerge. The methodology
for them remaining latent is cleanliness
or basic hygiene. When animals or
humans are weak or sick, they easily
become hosts. Pathogens can emerge,
mutate, and begin to travel from being to
being. So in the case of the “bird flu”, it’s
emergence was due to sick birds that
were poorly nourished without proper
habitiation (their cages that were too
small, overcrowded and fouled). These
factors combined with very wet soil
conditions, led to a host environment.
Now that the virulent strain has
emerged, it will travel, spread, mutate,
and destroy. This foundational story is
one which has been played out in
history several times in the form of the
Black Plague and other destructive
pandemics.
In the case of this current potential
outbreak, the most serious factor in the
modern world is human complacency.
People trust Western medicine to “cure”
everything and it should be noted that
Western medicine will not be able to
control this emerging virus. People
false sense of security is a formidable
challenge. It would behoove the
medical community to begin an
immediate campaign to teach the public
about cleanliness and transmission of
viral and bacteriological pathogens.
The “bird flu” is transmitted via air born
contact with infected animals (and
people). It is futile and destructive to
destroy all the birds in an affected
region. But it is understandable
because diagnosis and treatment have
not been successful and people resort
to desperate methods to try to prevent
the inevitable. In this case, the answer
to the “bird flu” pandemic is basic
hygiene in crowded communities.
Extreme measures should be taken
now in facilities that house chickens and
foul for eggs and meat for the consumer
market. New agricultural measures
should be enacted immediately to
sanitize these areas daily. Any single
bird that is weak or sick should be
disposed of. Weak birds should not be
allowed to produce eggs or hatchlings.
Imports of animals from foreign
markets in the form of exotic animals or
fowl should be stopped immediately.
This includes chicken (beef and fish)
for food consumption. Imported
animals, fish and fowl are a
controllable method for the virus to gain
a foothold in other countries. Also,
there is no way to know how these
animals and fowl for food consumption
have been raised and what standards
have been employed during their life
cycle. Products for food consumption
should be “home grown” meaning “in
the agricultural standards of the country
who houses them”. So, prevention of
an Avian flu pandemic will be found in
the area of sanitation and hygiene as
well as banning imports.
There is no “cure” for the “bird flu” as
scientists already know. It should be
noted that quarantine is essential for
any person with the Avian flu and it
would be advisable for separate
facilities to be built in desert
communities which are dry and have
hot sun most of the year to control the
outbreak. In liberal American society,
quarantine is an unacceptable
methodology but it will be essential to
controlling the virus’ spread. To allow
people to rehabilitate in hospitals with
shared ventilation systems is
dangerous to everyone. Human
beings who habitate around each other
will inevitably “catch” the virus and it will
result in further host infections.
Hospices in desert communities
should be well equipped with staff and
supplies to help the people recover.
After isolation, the patient will have a
period of serious malaise while the
virus takes hold and ravages the body’
s immune system further.
Hydrotherapy and the pharmaceutical,
Tamiflu, will be effective in most
cases. Heat therapy and sunlight are
another promising natural remedy.
Heat will kill the virus taken in
quantities that human beings can
endure; consistently and over time.
Over heating is not recommended but
hydrotherapies will kill the virus and
comfort the patient. A positive outlook
is important. It should be noted that
recovery from this virus is possible.
Fear and panic will abound if the virus
gets out of control. Patients should be
reassured in a wholesome way that
this illness is survivable and that they
can lead normal lives. As an
interesting side note, some sterility will
result from both the virus and the
treatment but this is a small price to
pay for survival.
After the initial stages of the influenza,
the patient will experience a very fast
rebound and feel that they are fully
recuperated but there will be lasting
effects for many years to come with
“odd” remissions and reemergence of
flu-like symptoms. People who have
had the Avian flu can live a healthy
lifestyle but will have to make lifestyle
adjustments. A diet with mostly
vegetarian foods and at least double
the normal intake of water is
recommended. It is important to
continue to flush the system in order to
keep the virus, which remains in
people’s bodies for a lifetime, in
check. These suggestions will enable
some people to survive and live with
the “bird flu” virus which emerges in the
Fall of 2006.
