Predictions: 1st Quarter 2005 Posted 12/21/04
After the holiday season, many
Americans appear to be fed up with
consumerism, debt load, and common
place pressures placed on them by
marketing and advertising firms. Many
disconnect unnecessary technology and
services even with huge sales and deep
discounts offered after the holidays.
Statistics on consumer spending will
show that the economy is slowing down
when people stop spending and
borrowing. Correct 1/04/05 USA Today
newspaper reports in its Money Section
that WalMart stores struggled through
the holiday season. The retailer was
forced to lower its sales estimates for
December to 1-3%.
Correct 1/07/05 USA Today newspaper
reports that the holiday shopping results
are not great but solid. December sales
growth was low for some stores (Sears,
Pennies, The Gap, Mays) but the use of
gift cards (in which the sale is counted
at the time the card is redeemed)
brought the sales numbers up slightly in
the last week of December. The
conflicting sales results are based on
gift cards, discounts, and steep
markdowns that could affect the overall
quarterly earnings. The article states
that "Still, sales were garnered by steep
discounting, which prompted some
retailers to warn that earnings might be
jeopardized as a result". This appears to
be a ploy to "defer" less than desirable
sales results.
Globally
Terrorist activities will continue to rock
the world in various locales. The
criminal activity is being used by a small
group of people to draw attention to their
causes and is not a true desire to show
the world about the beliefs of a particular
faith or territorial conflict. Terrorist activity
has become a tool used by a few
rebellious segments of people in order
to gain attention to personal agendas.
Correct 2/09/05 CNN News reports that
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, on
a diplomatic trip to Europe and the
Middle East, speaks out that the people
of Iraq will not be denied freedom
because of the acts of a few.
Tension mounts in China as the
government places restrictions on
economic growth. The economy of the
nation is beginning to advance in ways
that does not allow for a balanced
lifestyle of its citizens from the
government’s point of view so they
intervene to pace the country’s progress.
AIDS in Africa will again take the
forefront and many people will die of
new strains of the virus. Worldwide
hunger in the region will compound the
problem as well as the availability of
medical supplies. There is much
suffering in this area of the world and it
is the responsibility of the nations of the
world to step in to alleviate the suffering
of these people. Resources in America
and the United Kingdom are being
diverted to the war effort while some
tribes in Africa are quietly becoming
extinct. Correct 12/27/04 The Oprah
Winfrey Show reports on her Angel
Network that 1-3 people are affected
with AIDS in certain areas of Africa. She
reports that it is likely that a generation
of people will be lost in the country due
to AIDS. PLEASE, PLEASE be generous
to this charitable organization. For

Correct 1/07/05 USA Today newspaper
reports that former South African
President Nelson Mandala's son has
died of AIDS. Mandala wants publicity
for the cause and not to hide it. The
article states that 5 million people in
Africa are infected with HIV and about
600 South Africans die from AIDS-
related complications daily.
France’s economy does not allow
enough freedom for expansion in the
medical and technological fields. To
divert the majority of the country’s funds
into “lifestyle” issues for the majority of
the people is beneficial, but the
economy will eventually crumble when
infrastructure products and technology
do not keep pace with the world.
Competition in the world marketplace
with the development of new and
progressive strategies is lacking right
now in France. The overall growth of the
country becomes thwarted in the near
future and the country will suffer
economically.
Homeland Security
Homeland Security Reform in America
will appear to have some flaws.
Americans become complacent and the
new management is inept. The borders
to many countries including the United
States are not secure enough. Correct
12/28/04 USA Today newspaper reports
that the former Inspector General of the
Homeland Security Department, Clark
Kent Ervin, said that there are still
security gaps in the country that have yet
to be closed and he calls the current US
department "dysfunctional". He said that
the department is chaotic and
disorganized and is wasting millions of
dollars. He said that border customs
investigations are often hampered
because the agents do not have gas
money for their cars.
While territorial crisis abound in the
world, people exhibit unusual
responses when the subject of freedom
of borders comes up. Countries have
the right to initiate strong border policies
to regulate the coming and going of
people into their countries as well as the
flow of goods and services. Correct
1/18/05 Associated Press reports Iraqi
Officials close the borders to Iraq and
extended night time curfews from
January 29 - 31st in a move to protect
voters during the January 30th free
election. Correct 1/31/05 CNN News
reports that the first free election in Iraq
closes without an incident with a good
turnout. All the countries of the world are
too lax in allowing immigration and
travel from everyone at all times.
Countries are leaving themselves open
for catastrophe by having such policies.
Border security will become a major
issue in the next quarter.
Medicine
Recent pharmaceutical scandals in
America will continue. Pharmaceutical
companies have controlled the FDA to
rush drugs into the marketplace too
soon. This is contrary to their creed to
“do no harm” to consumers. Money will
be found to have been placed ahead of
consumer safety. Correct 1/04/05 CNN
News reports that pharmaceutical
company, Eli Lilly, had information for
15-years that patients taking the drug
Prozac were 12 times as likely to
commit suicide than other patients
being treated for depression with other
methods. Also, they were 2 times as
likely to experience psychosis. The
report said that the drug manufacturer
tried to minimize the risk from the
public. Correct 1/07/05 USA Today
newspaper reports that the prescription
industry's main trade group reports that
drug companies will begin to voluntarily
post the results of clinical trials on-line.
Maurice Hinchey, Democrat from New
York, is likely to present legislation to
make the practice mandatory citing the
public's right to know.
Marketing and advertising strategies
overtook a common sense approach to
moving drugs into the marketplace.
Scandals emerge as executives are
exposed in money making schemes.
The pressure to increase quarterly
earnings to support stock portfolios is at
the heart of the problem.
Medical advancements in stem cell
research will continue to move forward
with the majority of the discoveries being
found in European and Asian countries.
Americans scientists are hampered by
excessive governmental legislation
which does not allow for the
development of the science. Correct
1/07/05 CNN News reports that Senator
Sam Brownback of Kansas has
proposed anti-cloning legislation and
Senate members used a filibuster to
stop the bill by an 86-vote margin. Dr.
Bill Hurlbut, a physician and Stanford
Biology Professor, proposes a process
that would prevent the beginning of
creation during cloning to try to move the
science forward and bridge the gap of a
bitterly divided debate.
The American government’s tinkering in
the field will result in the loss of stem
cell patents, processes, and technology
to other countries. Correct 2/12/05 A
USA Today newspaper article reports
that South Korean scientists have
succeeded with the first successful
clone of a human embryo. The research
is designed to aid in stem cell work for
diseases like Parkinson's. Meanwhile,
critics in the US urge Congress to ban
all forms of human cloning
immediately. In the same article, Carl
Feldbaum of the Biotechnology Industry
Organization comments "With an
uncertain political climate.. it is no
coincidence that much of the ground
breaking work in this field is being done
overseas."
Medicine
Intellectual Property Rights will come to
the forefront as people compete for
patents on stem cell research and new
scientific discoveries. Even
collaboration from American scientists
will be thwarted by excessive
legalization of the process. Also,
American scientists will not agree to
share the rights and will stubbornly
seek patents on their own in order to
take the “lion’s share” of the financial
reward over collaboration and bringing
discoveries to the market for the good
of all mankind.
Advancements in surgical cardiac
procedures will emerge this quarter
that will allow people with heart
disease to live longer. Correct 1/05/05
ABC News with Peter Jennings reports
new medical research from the New
England Journal of Medicine that
indicates that lowering cholesterol is
not enough in the fight against heart
disease. Arterial inflammation is the
cause of many heart attacks. Targeting
the lowering of cholesterol and
inflammation reduction will lead allow
people with heart disease to live longer.
New research into heart disease will
indicate that food additives, especially
corn syrup extenders, have led to an
increase in the incidence of the
disease. The shift to a low fat
American diet in the 1970’s led to
substitutes and extenders in foods that
contributed to this trend. A manuscript
will be published that reports a
correlation between food additives and
heart disease.
Financial
Business foundations will be rocked
when workers no longer remain in jobs
with base salaries and huge benefits
packages. Workers will seek out
employment that offers a larger salary
up front and less benefits packages.
People will begin to pay for their own
health insurance and retirement
benefits and become less reliant on
the companies that they work for
leading to more job turnover. This will
lead to the need for more circulating
cash in business and less money
being deferred in the form of incentives
and bonus packages. Correct
12/27/04 USA Today newspaper
reports in the Money Section that
employees are becoming skeptical
about stock buy back programs and
just saying no even though companies
are offering the incentive more than
ever.
American businesses will counter this
trend by seeking out economic
strategies in the international
marketplace and leave expensive
American worker behind despite public
outrage. Excessive taxation in America
and the high cost of the employment of
American workers results in
businesses to seeking out alternatives
in order to turn a profit.
Health Insurance companies in
America lead the economy to wreck
and ruin due to the expense of running
programs in the current business
environment. National Health Care
Reform is no longer a commodity to be
theorized. It is a critical necessity right
now so that the government in the
United States can remain solvent.
Lobbyists need to be controlled.
Health Care Reform will elevate to a
crisis level. 1/05/05 MSNBC covers a
live Press Conference from President
Bush where he outlines the need for
medical liability reform and his plans to
send a bill to Congress to limit legal
awards for medical malpractice. Legal
awards directly attributed to
malpractice insurance costs that are
driving doctors out of business. He
said that more than 1/2 of American
hospitals have lost doctors to the cost
of malpractice insurance and he
considers the situation to be a crisis.
The Social Security Reform will take
center stage in American politics but
will find weak support from both
Houses of Government. The answer to
the problem is personal savings
accounts as President Bush proposes
but it will be a hard sell. This issue is
not clearly understood by the American
public which will exacerbate the
problem. Correct 2/03/05 USA Today
newspaper reports on President
Bush's State of the Union address
announcing sweeping changes in the
Social Security system. His remarks
led to cheers from the Republican side
of the House and boos from the
Democratic side. With the Republican
Party's dominance of politics at this
time in history, the President believes
the time is ripe for reform. Correct
2/11/05 CNN News reports that the
public is skeptical about Social Security
reform even though the President has
made numerous appearances to
speak to the public and reassure
them.
The President will get this reform
signed, sealed and delivered but there
will be a stunning reversal when the
American public does not warm up to
the idea and very few participate
because they do not understand it. The
issue will become the “white elephant”
of the George Bush second term
Presidency from a historic perspective.
The Social Security System in America
will collapse as predicted in 2015 due
to a lack of management and reform.
The problem is that seniors are taking
too many benefits right now and
“bleeding the system” for their personal
needs. They are depleting the coffers
of Social Security and not enough
money is being retained or invested for
upcoming generations. The true
reform to Social Security is to cap
benefits for seniors right now.
Discoveries
The mysteries of life and death will
continue to be explored. People will be
hard pressed to understand the new
discoveries which will enable them to
more fully understand the transition
termed “death”. Americans, by nature,
do not acknowledge the subject. In
America, youth is deified and death is
dismissed. The culture refuses to
acknowledge the concept of aging.
The aged are not revered but
dismissed as a viable part of American
culture (unless they can be sold to as
in pharmaceutical or investment
companies). Often the aged are
discarded in nursing homes and other
facilities in which they left to face the
eventuality of their life circumstance.
This fosters depression and
resentment in the aged.
There will be discoveries in
Atmospheric Science and weather
prediction accuracy will be improved.
Correct 1/06/05 CNN reports that US
Senator Joe Lieberman proposes the
use of a worldwide tsunami warning
system after the crisis in Sri Lanka and
Indonesia. He said that the forecasting
system has been improved over recent
years and is more accurate. He said it
could be used to save lives. The US
and United Nations are in agreement
to want to implement the system of a
global scale.
Also, it will be reported that the burning
of fossil fuels has wrecked havoc on
the global environment and ozone
levels are much higher than predicted.
Global Warming is going to become a
major concern in the future. Correct
12/27/04 USA Today newspaper
reports that a small hamster species
has become extinct and it is a direct
result of global warming. It is the first
reported case that global warming
leading to the extinction of a species.
Electric cars should be initiated now in
all areas of the world in order to slow
the crisis. The solution lies in mass
transit systems like the ones in place
in Europe or Americans will need to live
near their jobs.
