Vilification of issues raises concerns
when other people cannot discern
curiosity versus compassion.  Whenever
a society seeks to undertake vilification
of certain segments of society and
deification and hero worship of others,
humankind is in trouble.  It is easy for
some people to think that they are right
and others are wrong especially when
joining in like minded groups.  With the
support of historic documents and
theology, these people rationalize a
correct “foundation” for the group’s
position.  This is not necessarily true or
correct.  The correct methodology in the
right to die social issue is compassion,
mercy, and the discovery and
acknowledgement of the rights of all
people.

Human beings have a right to be born
and a right to die.  It is not circumspect
to visualize a world that is polarized in
one direction or the other in favor of the
vilification of some groups and the
postulation of others.  Still and all, right
to die cases are unique and afford a
great deal of polarization and
discussion.  To put the issue in succinct
terms, neither group on the left or right of
the right to die issue is correct.

The right to die is a personal right and a
personal choice.  The family in the Terry
Schiavo case is not showing
compassion to either side of the issue
which exacerbates the public outrage.
To seek favor in the public eye, has
become a foundational element of
modern society.  In the Terry Schiavo
case, the reason for this was to build a
public consensus that one side’s point
of view was right and the other side was
wrong in order to bring about an agreed
upon result, thus to bring a “correct”
point of view into mainstream society.

From a higher point of view, it is not wise
to put right to life or right to die issues in
these terms.  People who believe in a
free society must view these issues in
terms of their beliefs; they are free to
choose.  People have a right to both
points of view in a melting pot society.
Both right to life and right to die cases
rely on the compassion of the human
beings involved and the quality of their
compassionate spirit.  But at the heart of
the Terry Schiavo case, was a unique
and qualifying historic event and both
sides should not  be reprimanded at
this juncture.  The mere act of being
born does not hold a promise unless
there are nurturing, caring individuals
willing to protect and support life.
In right to life cases, similarly, the
incapacitated human being needs the
support and compassion of loving
individuals willing to help the person
make the transition to the other side of
life.  So, the quality of life and death
become an issue for the individuals
helping the soul make the transition.
These people's compassion and true
caring for the spiritual well being of
their loved one  results in the “success”
of the transition.

Many in current society would like to
make right to life and death cases a
social, legal, ethical and religious
issue.  But still and all, the matter falls
back on the individuals involved and
their level of compassion and
willingness to support another human
being’s life (and death).

It is very difficult for people to view right
to life and death from a higher level and
they often fall back on theology or
legality to rationalize their choices.  But
the heart of the issue is a highly
personal, individual decision making
process and people in current society
lack internal foundation in which to
base their choices.  It should never be
the basis of theology or legislation to
“force” people in a free society to make
choices in right to life or death cases.

In the broad classroom called human
life, it is wise to remember the folly of
exacerbating social issues for the
benefit some people and the detriment
of others and qualify it as for the
majority of people.  Again, the correct
point of view is compassion and the
freedom for people to choose the
“correct” way based on their personal,
religious, social, and moral
conscience.  People outside of the
issue cannot understand what others
go through.

And finally it should be noted that
compassionate people would never
seek notoriety in right to life or death
cases, per say.  Both sides of the Terry
Schiavo family issue, for the most part,
are notoriety seekers who have pushed
the envelope in order to gain attention
for their social and political points of
view in the right to life and death
cause.  It was a personal family war
and the larger societal whole should
not have been pulled into it to reinforce
that one side of the equation was
“correct”.  It was flawed thinking and it
is also salacious and self serving.

Historically, people should remember
these things in order to achieve a
foundational balance necessary to live
in such a complex society in a humane
and compassionate way.  Many people
will follow in this right to life and death
battle and it will become a recognizable
challenge that defines this generation
of people.  From a historic point of view,
people will discover sadness and
remorse for all that transpired and all
that was lost in this innocent, Terry
Schiavo.
